How to Choose a Gimbal: Key Things to Consider Before Buying [GUIDE]
Krzysztof Fiedorek
A gimbal is a device that helps stabilize footage while recording video. It’s an essential tool for anyone looking to capture smooth and steady shots. There are many types of gimbals on the market, so choosing the right one can be challenging.
Gimbals can be divided into several basic types depending on the number of axes that stabilize the camera. The most popular are 3-axis gimbals, which stabilize the camera in three directions: up-down, left-right, and forward-backward. There are also 2-axis gimbals, stabilizing in two directions: up-down and left-right, while 1-axis gimbals stabilize only in one direction: up-down.
Why is this important? Understanding this will help you take the first step in finding the right device.
Application: Match the Gimbal to Your Needs
Choosing the right gimbal starts with defining how and for what purposes you’ll be using it, as well as the device you’ll be recording with. Key details to consider:
- Single-axis gimbals: These stabilize in only one direction, usually either horizontal or vertical rotation. They’re the most affordable and ideal for beginners.
- Three-axis gimbals: These stabilize in all three directions: horizontal, vertical, and rotational. While more expensive, they provide superior stabilization.
- Gimbals for phones: Specifically designed for stabilizing footage from mobile phones, they’re usually small, lightweight, and relatively affordable.
- Gimbals for cameras: These are intended for stabilizing footage from film cameras or DSLRs. Larger and heavier than phone gimbals, they offer better image stabilization.
Functionality: A Good Gimbal Does More
Some gimbals come with extra features, such as built-in lenses, monitors, or remote control. If you want these options, make sure the gimbal you choose has them. Key terms to look for in the product description include:
- Panorama mode
- Object tracking mode
- Timelapse mode
- Slow-motion mode
- Selfie mode
- Manual control mode
Choosing the gimbal’s features depends on the type of videos you want to create. If you plan to shoot with a drone, look for a gimbal with object tracking. If recording with a camera or phone, timelapse or slow-motion features may be beneficial.
Technical Specifications: Check the Product Details
When choosing a gimbal, consider some technical factors, from the obvious (like price) to specifications that might not come to mind initially but could affect performance. Review the product details before buying and pay attention to these points:
- Battery capacity: Gimbals run on batteries or rechargeable packs. Battery life depends on capacity and usage intensity. For long recordings, choose a gimbal with a high-capacity battery.
- Maximum supported weight: Gimbals have different load capacities. Before buying, ensure it can handle the weight of your camera, phone, or other recording equipment.
Gimbal prices range from several hundred to several thousand PLN. Comparing specifications and features will help you select a model within your budget.
How to Care for Your Gimbal
Gimbals are delicate devices, so handle them with care. Avoid exposing them to moisture, which can damage electronics and mechanical parts. Also, regularly clean the gimbal, as dust, sand, and dirt are its natural enemies.
It’s also wise to avoid extreme temperatures. Gimbals shouldn’t be used below -10°C or above 40°C. Avoid areas with strong electromagnetic interference, as this can disrupt the gimbal’s operation and cause it to lose stabilization.
