What are cookies?
Cookies, also known as "biscuits" (from the English word "cookie"), are small text files (txt.) sent by a web server and saved on the user’s side (usually on the hard drive). Cookie parameters allow only the server that created them to read the contained information. Cookies are mostly used in counters, surveys, online stores, sites requiring login, ads, and to monitor visitor activity.
What do cookies do?
Cookies contain various information about the user of a specific website and their connection history with the site. They allow the server owner to identify the user`s IP address and, for example, verify which pages were visited before arriving at the website. Furthermore, the server owner can check the user’s browser type and any errors encountered when displaying the site. However, this data is not associated with specific individuals but only with the internet-connected computer where the cookie was stored (the IP address serves this purpose).
How do we use cookie information?
Until October 20, 2024, cookie data was used to automatically recognize a specific user by the server, allowing it to generate a personalized webpage. This allows, for instance, tailoring the content of websites. How does it work in practice?
The server, using saved cookies, can check if a particular computer has participated in a survey. Additionally, it customizes the ads on the website so they don’t repeatedly display to the same user.
The publisher of Reporterzy.info uses cookies to optimize portal usage and adapt its content to user preferences. They are also used to create anonymous, aggregated statistics, excluding personal user identification. This helps the editorial team understand how users interact with the portal and allows improvements to its structure and content.
Additionally, the publisher may place or allow a third party to place cookies on the user`s device to ensure the portal functions correctly. This helps monitor and check the portal’s performance. Such third parties may include Google, which collects necessary data for the publisher.
Users can set their browsers to prevent cookies from being saved on their hard drive or automatically delete them after a specific time. Settings may also be changed to block automatic handling of cookies in the browser settings or inform users each time cookies are sent to their device. Unfortunately, this may lead to problems displaying some websites, like repeatedly displaying the same banner ads.
